Radioactive Waste Management Plant (ZUOP)

Radioactive Waste Management Plant (ZUOP) is the only institution in Poland established to manage radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel and is responsible for its safe management from collection of the waste from generators until its disposal. Currently, ZUOP operates
National Radioactive Waste Repository in Różan.

Radioactive waste collected by ZUOP is processed, which aim is to segregate the waste, reduce its volume and condition it to a form suitable for disposal.

ZUOP's Educational centre

On site there is a conference room available with the seating capacity of 40. One of the exhibition rooms is dedicated to discoveries in the field of radioactivity and the history of the first reactor constructed in Poland - EWA. Through the special window one can see the hall, where EWA reactor was operated between 1958 and 1995. In the exhibition there is also some of the equipment used in the reactor building in the past. Display cases feature naturally occuring radioactive materials, that can be measured on one's own with a dosimeter. On the walls there are graphics containing information about ZUOP activities. Thanks to VR technology visitors have the possibility to watch films dedicated to radioactive waste treatment and National Radioactive Waste Repository.

Waste treatment installations

As a part of Storage and Treatment Department tour one can visit installations used for treatment of radioactive waste and become familiar with the principles of their operation. These include:  evaporation installation and reverse osmosis installation. During this guided tour a glovebox is presented, as well, that is used for dismantling of smoke detectors containing spent sealed radioactive sources.
